The structure of baby skin is basically the same as adult skin. However, baby skin is still developing! Baby skin is particularly sensitive. Many times thinner than adult skin, the epidermis is the top layer of skin. Skin cells are less densely packed and the horny layer is not thick enough. As a result, the skin is still “open”. The natural skin fats, the lipids, lie on top of the horny layer. Baby skin produces less fat than adult skin. If this layer gets too thin, the skin can start to dry out! For example, water or the use of certain soap products can break down this layer of fat unnoticed.
Also, a baby’s natural, protective acid mantle is not yet fully developed. This acid mantle has an acidity of 5.5 pH. It is important to use products that match the pH value of the acid mantle. This way, the acid mantle is not broken down but rather extra protected. All Inoli Skin Care products are pH skin-neutral. Building up the acid mantle takes at least 6 months.
Baby skin development
A baby’s skin is not fully developed until he or she is four years old! Before that time, mom and dad should be aware that the skin is much thinner, the protective layer is still underdeveloped, and the epidermis is not fully closed. There is also a risk of dry skin because a baby’s skin does not produce much oil.
Irritations from outside
Inoli Skin Care is specially designed for anyone with fragile, sensitive and/or dry skin. This certainly includes the smallest of our population! Babies have enormously vulnerable skin. After birth, they have a thin ‘layer’ that protects them. After a few days, this disappears and mums and dads will have to lend a hand!
